Proxim

Description:

Proxim Wireless Corporation is a company that builds broadband wireless networking systems. The company is based in San Jose, California.

Proxim Wireless was originally named YDI Wireless, Inc. On June 22, 2004 YDI purchased Terabeam Corporation, a company engaged in broadband wireless solutions. Within two months, because the name Terabeam was more widely known than YDI Wireless, YDI renamed itself Terabeam Wireless. On July 27, 2005, Terabeam Wireless bought the business of Proxim Corporation. In September 2007, Terabeam adopted the name Proxim Wireless Corporation.

Proxim Wireless is managed by a team headed by its President and Chief Executive Officer, Pankaj Manglik. He is a graduate of The Wharton School with the degree Masters in Business Administration. Other officers are: Tom Twerdahl, Interim Chief Finance Officer; David Renauld, VP, Corporate Affairs and; Lionel Chmilewsky, EVP Worldwide Sales.

Proxim has a wide array of markets for their networking systems such as governments, enterprises, service providers and other communities. The company offers mesh, wireless local area network (or WLAN), point to point, and point to multipoint products. Proxim Wireless is ISO 9001 certified and a principal member of the telecommunications technology called WiMAX (or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). It is also one of the central members of the Home Radio Frequency Working Group (or HomeRF). HomeRF is a specification for wireless networking for home devices that was developed in 1998. The group includes mobile gadget luminaries such as Philips, Motorola, and Siemens.

Proxim was once rated as the third in terms of sales of wireless equipment for corporations. It was bested only by networking giants Symbol Technologies and Cisco Systems.

Proxim also has deals with the telecommunications companies Motorola and Avaya to provide them with its wireless voice services. It also has an agreement with Intel wherein Proxim provides the latter with its Tsunami products that use WiMAX. These products came from the merger between Proxim and Western Multiplex in 2002.

ORiNOCO, a brand of a wide range of Wi-Fi networking equipment, is also marketed by Proxim. This was acquired by the company from Agere Systems in 2002. This Wi-Fi product line is 802.11 compliant.
